How your DNA guides care

Treatment informed by your biology

Your DNA holds the answers to why traditional treatment hasn't worked, and what will. NorthStar uses genetic testing to guide medication decisions, nutrient protocols, and aspects of your care plan, so treatment is built around your biology from the beginning. No more guessing. No more trial and error. Just precision care, grounded in science.

Your biology tells a story

Why genetics are central to addiction and its treatment

Here's something most people don't realize about addiction treatment: few programs in the country prescribe medication at all, and those that do prescribe the same medications, at the same doses to every patient who walks in the door. It doesn't matter that no two people experience this condition the same way. It doesn't matter that your brain chemistry, your metabolism, and your genetic makeup are completely different from the person next to you. The treatment is the same.

When it doesn't work, the system blames you, "You didn't try hard enough." But the truth is, the treatment was never designed for your biology in the first place.

NorthStar takes a fundamentally different approach. Your biology guides your treatment, not the other way around. Genetic testing isn't a bonus feature here. It's a core clinical tool that shapes every medication decision, every nutrient protocol, and every aspect of how your care plan is built, adjusted, and sustained across a full year.

Anonymity & protection throughout

How genetic testing works in treatment

It starts with a simple cheek swab, painless, done at home, included in your treatment kit. Your sample is sent to the lab labeled only with an internal patient ID. No name, no date of birth, no identifying information leaves your home. Privacy is built into the process from the very first step.

What comes back is a detailed picture of your genetics, hundreds of tiny variations in your DNA that, when analyzed together, reveal powerful patterns about how your brain works, how your body processes medications, and where your metabolism may be falling short.

Your care team uses this data in three ways. Select one to see how.

Understanding your risk

Genetic data helps explain why you developed AUD or SUD in the first place, up to 50% of that risk is written into your DNA, long before any choice you made.

Choosing the right medications

How you metabolize a drug, what dose you need, and which medications will actually work for your biology are all written into your DNA, so we match medication to you on day one.

Supporting nutrient pathways

We find where your nutrient and metabolic pathways need support, then combine your genetic data with lab results to build a protocol specific to your biology.

Uncovering why this condition developed

One of the most powerful and therapeutic uses of genetic data is helping patients understand why they developed Alcohol Use Disorder or Substance Use Disorder in the first place.

Your DNA impacts your risk

Up to 50% of your risk for AUD or SUD is genetic. That means a meaningful portion of your vulnerability was written into your DNA before you ever picked up a drink, before any choice you made, before any pattern you developed, before any of the moments that get held against you.1

This is not your fault

For many, it's the first time anyone has given them a concrete, biological explanation for why this has been so hard. That's not an excuse. It's the starting point for treatment that actually makes sense, and it lifts a weight that many people have been carrying for years.

Risk doesn't determine destiny

Your genetic data is information, a roadmap that helps your care team understand where support is needed, which tools will work best, and how to design a plan that works with your biology rather than against it.

Taking the guess work out of prescribing

Matching medications to your biology

Genetics make the biggest impact on how your body uses nutrients, but they impact medication too. How you metabolize a drug, what dose you need, and which medications will actually work for your biology are all written into your DNA. This is matching medication to your biology, not guessing.

Naltrexone is a clear example. Around 25% of the US population carries OPRM1 variants that make naltrexone significantly less effective.2 Without genetic testing, you'd spend weeks or months on a medication unlikely to work. With it, we know on day one whether naltrexone is the right tool for you.

Another example: if your TPH gene isn't producing enough serotonin, an SSRI alone won't help much. Your genetics tell us we need to support with 5-HTP first, so the SSRI has something to work with. That's how we build a regimen that actually does what it's supposed to do.

Why the same medication helps one person and fails another

Two people can take the exact same medication at the exact same dose and get completely different results. That isn't bad luck, and it isn't a lack of effort. It's genetics. Your DNA carries the instructions for the enzymes that break a drug down and the receptors it acts on, and small differences in those instructions change how a medication behaves once it is inside you.

Naltrexone is a good example. For most people it quiets cravings, but roughly one in four of us carries a version of the OPRM1 gene that blunts its effect. Prescribe it blindly and that person spends weeks on a medication that was never going to work for them, then often concludes that they are the problem. They aren't. The match was simply wrong.

"Your genes don't decide your future. They tell us where to start."

This is why we read your genetics before we prescribe, not after. We can see which medications fit your biology, what dose your body actually needs, and where a nutrient has to come first so the medication has something to work with. You skip the months of trial and error and start on something built to work for you.

How your brain chemistry gets rebuilt

Methylation: Your Brain's Assembly Line

Your brain is constantly building and rebuilding itself. To do that, it needs raw materials and processes like methylation to convert those raw materials into the neurotransmitters that regulate mood, focus, sleep, and craving.

When methylation breaks down, and it breaks down often in patients with AUD or SUD, the assembly line stalls. The raw materials are there, but the brain can't use them. NorthStar maps your genetics, finds where the processes don't work, and provides the nutrients and support needed to bring the assembly line back online.

Why Our Nutrients Make an Impact

If you've taken a multivitamin and felt like it did nothing, you were probably right. Generic supplements use standard forms at standard doses without accounting for whether your body can absorb them. NorthStar combines your genetic data with lab results to build a nutrient protocol specific to your biology. The result isn't just cognitive improvement, though that's significant, about 25% improvement at 30 days and up to 40% by year-end.3 It's measurable reductions in depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms. It's better sleep, steadier mood, and a brain that has the materials it needs to heal.

Genetics are not destiny, they are the roadmap

Your DNA doesn't determine your character, your motivation, or what you're capable of. What it does is help your care team understand where you need the most support, which tools are most likely to work for you, and how to build a plan that works with your biology instead of against it.

When patients hear their clinician say, "This was not your fault, and now we know exactly how to help you," the relief is something you can see. For many people, it's the first real moment of hope they've felt in a long time.
